Where Vision Starts
Epson traces back its roots to a historical place in Nagano, Japan. It all began with its predecessor, Daiwa Kogyo Ltd., a watch manufacturer established in May 1942.
The company supplies parts for Daini Seikosha in producing Seiko watches in 1943. They then formed Suwa Seikosha Co. Ltd. in 1959 and have developed various timepiece technologies. From here, the Seiko Group is born.
Two years later, Suwa Seikosha established their subsidiary called Shinshu Seiki Co., a supplier of watch precision parts. This subsidiary launched the world’s first mini printer, the EP-101, as a requirement in 1964’s Summer Olympics.
In 1975, the name Epson was coined based on the EP-101. EP derived from “Electronic Printer” and when added with “Son”, makes up the word: Son of Electronic Printer. This is derived to produce the next generation of printers. Additionally, their first branch in the west, Epson America Inc., was formed.
Achieving Vision
After several years, their printer business has been going well to the point that one of their printers, the MX-80, became the best-selling printer in the US. And by 1982, Shinshu Seiki officially renamed itself Epson Corporation.
Epson Corp. released two of another world’s firsts- the Handheld Computer and Portable Color LCD TV. Three years later, they merged with Suwa Seikosha Co. Ltd. to form what we know as Seiko Epson Corporation.
Moving on into the 21st century, Epson also became a camera manufacturer introducing the R-D1 digital RangeFinder Camera. All while still expanding their printer line and involving themselves in the Smartglasses market.
Their efficient, compact, and precision technologies enable them to pioneer some of the world’s firsts and various innovative products. Today, Epson continues to be one of the world’s technology leaders and exceed its customers’ expectations with its printing and visual solutions.
